An Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) is important because education is important.
Far too often society dictates what kind of education our children will receive. Too many of our children are counted out for things that are out of their control.
So, it is imperative that children don’t fall through the cracks in an educational system that doesn’t catch every child. The cracks result in a lack of prosperity as an adult. I’ve seen it too many times as a professor-students not being able to graduate because they couldn’t do the work. The help they needed they should have gotten before they stepped on a college campus.
I remember when my son was falling through the cracks. I didn’t understand the process. I didn’t know the questions to ask nor the actions to take in IEP meetings. And just like so many parents, I spent a lot of money on programs that didn’t work. But, I was lucky.
During my 12-year+ journey, I had awesome mentorships and access to researched best practices as a college professor which allowed me to develop systems that would assist my son from falling through the cracks to leading the pack and acceptance into an Honors College and scholarships. I learned to make the IEP work, to be a better advocate, and to position him for college and life success.
