My role as a professor, at a predominately white University and then a historically Black college, allowed me to experience the blessings of teaching, mentoring, and sometimes being “the mother away from home” to hundreds of young Black men.

I saw them struggle with my assignments even when they were smart.

I saw them carry the burden of what their family put on their shoulders without the family realizing it. Knowing that Black males make up 80% of the suicide rate in the Black community had me stay past my office hours plenty of times.
And the parents had no idea because their sons didn’t tell them. But they told me.
I saw first hand the consequences of parents not having at their disposal the proper systems to invest in their sons such as:
a lack of skill sets necessary to give them the advantage to get the most out of college
emotional immaturity that impacted their academics (most often their scholarships)
ending up with student loans without the college degree
decreased odds of prosperity
It begins way before college.

Challenges such as:
A suspension and expulsion rate higher than any other demographic
The underrepresentation in gifted programs, honors, and advanced placement courses
Disproportionately labeled “mentally challenged” without a clear plan forward for academic and life success.
Oftentimes, Black boys are forced to endure educational environments that promote the stereotype of their supposed intellectual inadequacy and “troublesome” behavior.
With all of this, you may be fearful of your son’s future but feel unprepared and overwhelmed to combat all of the continued and constant struggles that hinder the emotional, psychological, physical, and economic well-being of your son.
Believe me, as a Black boy mom of 3, I understand this fear that is unique to us.
But you have to push back the fear and do something or your son will fall through the cracks when you had the opportunity to act.
